TEACHING PROFILE

Thank you for visiting my digital portfolio. I hope that you enjoy learning about me and about the things that drive my passion. After working in the non-profit sector for more than twenty years, my career has transitioned into academia. I have fallen in love with my new path as a Family Science educator.

If there is only one thing that you take away from my portfolio, I want it to be that I am a passionate educator who is committed to reducing the impact of poverty by preparing students for careers strengthening families. As you read more about me and my experiences, I hope that you will see my passion shine through. My quest for knowledge, and for always growing and learning, leads me as an innovative educator who does not shy away from trying new strategies and teaching methods.

I believe that we learn by creating our own knowledge (constructivism). Further, I believe that my role is to provide opportunities and guidance for students to explore critical course content. I have developed a teaching model known as Learning Logs which provides opportunities for students to explore course content from five different learning preferences (visual, verbal, aural, physical, and logical) and throughout the six cognitive domains (remember, understand, apply, analyze, evaluate, and create). Students select their learning activities from a menu of available options. Completed activities are then added to their digital portfolios (websites) for instructor and peer review and feedback. Many of my students are non-traditional students in age and life experiences, therefore, I integrate principles of adult learning (andragogy) into all of my courses.
